The original Corning Market Street Historic District encompassed four blocks from Wall St to Chestnut St. Circa 2000, the district was expanded to include the north side of Market St from Chestnut to Bridge St. To qualify for landmark designation, the main street's historic integrity had to be re-established. This determination involved restoring 8 of the 12 building facades to their original design character. Under the guidance and design direction of Elise Johnson-Schmidt, the expanded Gaffer District restoration was completed and nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.
