Elise Johnson-Schmidt, then acting Director of Market Street Restoration and project architect, led the initiative to restore the downtown Corning’s Gaffer District to its original historic vision. The Connors' Apartments were the first upper-floor redevelopment in the city. This long-vacant space was rehabilitated for use as market-rate apartments with retail space below. The building's historic integrity was preserved, while apartments were created in keeping with the character of historic Market Street. The interiors and furnishings were also designed and selected by J-S&A.
The project became a case study by J-S&A and Marilyn Kaplan for the NYS Codes Division to explore Historic Building Code Revisions.
